Disaster Recovery Committee

A dispatch from PDG Tim Mannix:

You’re about to be asked to appoint a new committee!  RI has asked every District in North America to put in place Disaster Recovery plans in an effort to avoid the problems that were faced in the post-Katrina time frame. It is also an attempt to offer our fellow Rotarians more effective aid and support in case of an emergency.

Governor Barry asked me to spearhead this effort, and propose a process for the District to follow.  I have been working closely with NCVOAD (NC Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters) to insure that we don’t duplicate work and efforts already in existence.  They are anxious to utilize the resources and talents that we can make available to them, and they’re more than willing to share their experience and support systems with us.

I’ve recommended to Governor Barry the following suggestions:

1)      Become an active member of NCVOAD

2)      Create a Disaster Recovery committee at the District and Club levels

3)      The chair at the District would be the immediate Past District Governor, with the current DG, DGE and DGN serving.

4)      Have every club fill out the Disaster Relief Team Data Sheets. Compile the data at the District level and keep it current.

5)      Set up annual training for club chairs.  (RI has held two Disaster seminars thus far [New Orleans and Nashville] and District 7710 has been represented at both events.  The information received will be used to do annual training for club committee chairs.).

What’s needed?

1)      We need you to appoint a Disaster Committee chairperson – NLT May 1st.

2)      Please fill out the attached two Data Sheets and send them to me by 5/1.

Hopefully, we’ll never need to use these committees, but we’ll be prepared if the cause arises!

Thank you for your help, and contact me if you have any other questions.

Yours in Rotary Service.
