RYLA Students Share Leadership Experiences

Posted By Frank Vinluan

It’s never too early to learn leadership skills. Three Research Triangle High School students got a taste of leadership training as part of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Diwani Robinson, Haley Hillison, and Greyson Hassell, all juniors, shared their experiences joining at Camp Oak Hill, just northwest of Oxford.

The three RTHS students, sponsored by the RTP Rotary Club, joined more than 100 other students at RYLA. They said the experience offered both physical and mental challenges as students were placed in different scenarios where they were forced to work together and learn from each other. But Greyson said that leadership takes many forms, and the students learned that people can lead in different ways. Sometimes the loudest, most outspoken person is not the most effective leader, he said. They also learned how to welcome feedback from all parties. Diwani and Haley said that they enjoyed the experience so much that they hope to participate next year as counselors. In the meantime, all three said that they have learned lessons that they are applying to themselves and their high school activities.
